Northern Idaho Skiing: Where Adventure meets Affordability

Ski Resort Overview: Silver Mountain & Schweitzer Mountain Resort

For a budget-friendly ski vacation that doesn’t skimp on great skiing, Silver Mountain and Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Idaho are top choices. Both offer big vertical drops and incredible snow conditions, but they do so at different price points—making them great for skiers looking to tailor their trip to their budget.

Silver Mountain offers some of the best lift ticket prices in the U.S. at just $75 a day, making it a fantastic affordable option without sacrificing a solid ski experience. Skiers will enjoy long blue and black runs with plenty of intermediate and steep terrain. It’s one of the best deals out there, providing exceptional snow coverage and a variety of runs, especially for the price.

Schweitzer Mountain, on the other hand, provides access to world-class skiing for $100-$120 per day depending on how many days you ski. Schweitzer's mountain terrain has every feature an experienced skier is looking for—long runs, expansive bowls, and wide-open spaces to explore. Though it costs more than Silver, it’s a worthy investment for skiers looking for a more varied mountain experience at a fair price.

Both resorts are a great value, offering unforgettable skiing experiences whether you choose to stay within a tight budget or splurge just a little for a bigger mountain adventure.

Terrain Overview: Who is This Resort Geared Towards?

Both Silver Mountain and Schweitzer provide a variety of terrain, from long runs to steep bowls, offering an exciting mix of challenges and experiences for all skiers. Here's what you can expect at each resort:

Silver Mountain (below): With 2,300 acres of terrain and 2,200 feet of vertical, Silver Mountain has something for everyone. The resort has long blue and black runs, with plenty of intermediate and steep terrain to keep skiers engaged. While it doesn’t have the extensive bowl skiing of Schweitzer, it delivers fantastic skiing, especially for those on a budget. Silver’s solid vertical drop and affordability make it ideal for skiers looking to maximize their time on the slopes.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort (Right): Schweitzer is a skier’s dream for those seeking expansive bowls, longer runs, and a more varied mountain experience. With 2,900 acres of terrain and 2,400 feet of vertical, Schweitzer caters to skiers who crave more adventure. The mountain's variety of terrain and snow quality make it a must-visit for more advanced skiers, and its bowl skiing provides a distinct challenge that keeps visitors coming back for more.

Getting There

Both Silver Mountain and Schweitzer are easy to reach from Spokane, which is about an hour’s drive from either resort. Spokane International Airport offers affordable flights, making this a convenient option for those looking to take a quick ski trip without breaking the bank.

  • Silver Mountain is located just outside Kellogg, Idaho, making it a quick drive from Spokane.

  • Schweitzer Mountain Resort is near Sandpoint, Idaho, and is also an easy drive from Spokane.

With both resorts being so close to Spokane, you can easily combine the two for a multi-resort ski experience.

Tip: Always check weather and road conditions before traveling in the winter months, especially when heading to mountain resorts.
